Delicious Version 2 almost ready?

28 July 2008 4 Comments

Well yes, back in January the Del.icio.us blog promised us that feature complete new version (which was currently in private beta) was close to launching. Of course this never happened and even though I am a big fan of Del.icio.us and use it alot, to be honest it had been so long ago I had simply forgotten about it.

Welcome to the Delicious preview

That was until a new post appeared recently once again promising us the amazing new version. So what has caused the delay?

TechCrunch’s sources claim that the delay has been down to an inability to scale the new version properly. Each page lists every tag they’ve ever used which created a massive performance hit. Different people within Del.icio.us had different ideas as to how to prevent the site slowing to a crawl because of this.

As usual it was the database which was becoming a bottle-neck. So some thought that some form of caching was needed to reduce the strain on the database (memcached or similar perhaps?). I was really surprised to hear this as it means they didn’t already have some form of caching in place already! I had always assumed this was the case, as it seems to me to be common sense, but I guess not.

But hopefully they’ve managed to come up with a solution and we should be seeing a rollout of the new 2.0 interface soon. No actual date has been set by the guys at Del.icio.us but from their blog post it sounds like it could be any day now.

Oh and don’t forget that when the new version goes live you will be logged out, so if you’re unsure as to your password (when was the last time you had to login to Del.icio.us?) make sure that the email address they have for you is valid just incase you have to use the forgotten password function on the site.

The old (and - for now - current) version of delicious is built on Perl. Heard some great things about it (viz. its speed) in its current implementation.

That they don’t have any form of caching now surprises me too … heck, it’s WICKED!

Hoping that the version launches really really soon, as the preview has been teasing me for ages by now :)

I always felt that Del.icio.us became a little bit more unstable after Yahoo bought it. I know its probably just because it became more popular at that time than anything Yahoo did (am sure their infrastructure is up to the task) but still I did have a few moments of “Bloody Yahoo!” the first few times it failed to load for me.

Although in fairness it is very rare that it doesn’t load. And it is very responsive even with my thousands of bookmarks/tags.

But here’s hoping that the new version is as stable/quick as the current one. I would hate to see them sacrifice that in the name of a more *2.0* layout!

The current del.icio.us has plenty of caching in place already, but our growth requires the extra capability that the new, faster Delicious will have. :)

    Britta: Sounds good :)
Am glad that speed is something that the Delicious team are paying close attention to.

Am really looking forward to giving the new version a spin! Guess you can’t let us know how long we have left to wait?
